The West Midlands VRU is taking a public health approach to violence reduction and a public health approach to data analysis. We are putting evidence at the heart of our policy decisions.

In 1920, Charles Winslow defined public health as “the science and the art of preventing disease, prolonging life and promoting health through organised community efforts”.

In treating violence as a disease, to understand its impact on the communities of the West Midlands, we have worked with partners to gather a wide range of data and intelligence.

This section demonstrates some of the ways we are doing this.
